The Alkaline Ash Diet is a health plan that uses foods that contain alkaline ash to help reduce the acidic content of one’s body and improve the overall health. A diet that contains too much acid will cause other health problems. Alkaline ash helps to restore balance to the pH levels of the body and helps to maintain a healthy digestive system and overall well being.

There are many foods that contain alkaline ash. Most notable are the fruits and vegetables. Fruits that tend to be high in alkaline ash include apples, dates, bananas, blackberries, grapefruit, nectarines, oranges, raisins and pineapple. Vegetables that are known to contain alkaline ash include turnips, broccoli, squash, carrots, mushrooms, cabbage, eggplant, cauliflower and celery. While there seems to be some variations of these, for the most part nearly every published list agrees. Other foods that contain alkaline ash include buckwheat, olive oil, molasses, almonds, millet, and milk.

Imbalances of the pH in the human body can cause many problems. A body that has too much acid can suffer from acidosis. A body with too much alkaline can suffer from alkalosis. The body tries to adjust the levels by making a series of changes within, but these changes often result in other problems taking place. A pH that is out of balance can cause respiratory problems, stomach problems, and just a general ill feeling.

The Alkaline Ash Diet is one of many food combining diets that require a lifestyle change to maintain a healthy digestive tract and pH balance within the body. Alkaline and acid occur naturally in all foods, but processed food generally are more difficult for the body to deal with (see the acid alkaline food list for details on which foods to eat). On each of the food combining programs, it is recommended that one remove as much processed food from the diet as possible. Because certain types of food require certain digestive processes, they are kept separate to allow the body to digest everything as it was intended. Alkaline Ash Diet, the Hay Diet and other Food Combining Diets all work towards one common goal. That is reaching and maintaining the optimal health that one can achieve.
