What are alkalizing foods?

Alkalizing foods are foods that are loaded with alkaline elements including calcium, sodium and potassium. All foods are either alkaline or acid-forming. Including most vegetables and fruits, these foods do not produce acid in the body. Consuming these foods will counteract the intake of acidic foods that cause cells within the body to deteriorate. Alkaline foods assist in balancing the body’s pH and should be included in each meal.

Why alkalizing foods are important?

When the body is too acidic, it borrows minerals from the organs and bones. This causes the body to suffer from disorders such as arthritis and osteoporosis. Consuming adequate amounts of low-acid forming foods helps the body function at an optimum level. When the body is in the proper state of alkalinity, cell degeneration, fatigue, stress and diseases are reduced.

Alkalizing vegetables

Colored vegetables contain the most alkaline elements. These include: broccoli, cabbage, carrots, lettuce, beets, wheat grass and many others. At the top of the alkalinity chart are leafy greens like spinach. These greens are loaded with chlorophyll, nutrients, vitamins and several alkaline minerals including: manganese, potassium, calcium and iron. The juice of potatoes has excellent alkaline properties and is commonly used to treat overproduction of stomach acid and ulcers. Versatile cucumbers are also highly alkaline and can be used in juices or eaten with the peel on. The peel adds to the alkalinity of vegetables. Eating celery before a meal neutralizes acids in a quick manner.

Alkalizing fruits

Most fruits, including apples, oranges, melons and berries, are also good sources of alkaline elements. Dried fruits, such as figs and raisins, are highly alkaline due to the oxidation that takes place while drying. During the drying process, a significant amount of acid is removed from them. The acid content in bananas is extremely low. Even when eaten in a huge quantity, they do not cause acidification. Citrus fruits, such as grapefruits and lemons, have alkalizing properties and can be eaten 15 minutes before acid-forming foods to make them easier to digest.

A healthy diet involves consuming an adequate amount of alkalizing foods. These foods offer a host of benefits by maintaining the body’s pH level. Use a high alkaline food list to figure out what foods are best to consume.
