High Acid Food and Which Ones To Avoid

Acid FoodThere are lower acid foods that you can enjoy regularly, and high acid foods to enjoy sparingly.

If you’re dealing with health issues, for example, acid reflux or just looking to develop a healthier diet for yourself, then you should know about your high acid foods and which ones to avoid. Some of this very well may surprise you, but here are some high acid foods to keep in your diet, and some high acid foods to avoid, or at least, to enjoy responsibly and not include in your every day diet.

Acid Foods to Keep in Your Regular Diet

It’s not a bad idea to actually keep meat, beans and similar proteins in your daily diet. Corn is acidic, but good to keep on hand. Grains, fish and poultry are all good to keep in your kitchen at all times, too. Here’s one that may surprise you: distilled water. Alkaline water is the best to drink. Does that mean you should limit your water intake? Not at all. Keeping your acid at a healthy level means drinking around a gallon a day. You can easily make your water more alkaline by adding some lemon juice to the mix.

Acid Foods to Avoid or Enjoy Carefully

Eggs and organ meats are great in small servings, but these high protein foods are also incredibly high in acid. If you want to avoid acid reflux, stick to low acid proteins like beans on a regular basis and enjoy some eggs and liver now and then. Wine, certain gourmet cheeses, sour cream and yogurt are all high in acid, so you’ll want to enjoy them in small doses. It’s safe to, say, drink a glass of wine a day or have a yogurt with lunch, but limit your intake or you may find yourself forming GERD or gastroesophageal reflux disease (acid reflux).

High acid foods are just fine to enjoy now and then, but the key words there are “now and then”. Eating liver and wine with every dinner, eggs for every breakfast and three cups of yogurt with every lunch are a surefire way to get gout or trigger acid reflux. Most of us get a little heart burn after one or two glasses of wine, but dealing with a real case of GERD can be incredibly painful if not treated properly.

In any event, if you do plan on having a big, meaty omelet now and then, if you’re a serious wine and cheese lover, if you enjoy organ meets from time to time, just make sure to keep to balance your diet with alkaline foods  Mixing your high acid foods with plenty of low acid foods. For example, cheese balanced with a nice healthy salad. Refer to an alkaline food chart to find finds that are more alkalizing for your body.
